BEIJING,Feb.17(Xinhua)--FormanyChinesepeople,theYearoftheHorsebeganofficiallywiththeopeningnotesofChinaCentralTelevision's(CCTV's)"SpringFestivalGala."OnMonday,theannualculturalofferingspreadbeyondBeijing,withsecondarylocationshostingstagesinfourotherChinesecities.

ThesecitiesareYibininsouthwestChina'sSichuanProvince,HarbininthenortheasternHeilongjiangProvince,HefeiintheeasternAnhuiProvince,andYiwu--probablythemostfamiliarlocationforinternationalviewers,famedasthe"world'ssupermarket"--ineastChina'sZhejiangProvince.

"TheirselectionsignifiesChina'seconomyadvancingacrossmultiplesectorsandtransitioningtowardshigh-qualitydevelopment,"saidWangYing,aresearcherwiththeAcademyofChinaOpenEconomyStudiesattheUniversityofInternationalBusinessandEconomics.

Yiwu'sselectionwasanodtohowfarthecityhasprogressedfromitsbeginningsasaroadsidemarket--ajourneywhichcanbetracedthroughfamilieslikeQianRourou's.

Asworkfortheholidayintensified,Qian,generalmanageroftheZhejiangXiaohuobanCulturalCreativityCompany,wasbusyplanningtheopeningofathirdstoreintheGlobalDigitalTradeCenter,whichwasthelocationofoneofthe"SpringFestivalGala"stages.

In1995,herin-lawsstartedthecompanywitha1-square-meterstallthatsoldstationery.Afactorylaterfollowed,andtoday,thefamilyoperatessixstoresintheYiwuInternationalTradeMarket,whichistheworld'slargestsmall-commoditieswholesalehub.

"We'vebeeninstationeryandcreativeproductsformorethan30years,acrosstwogenerations,"Qiansaid.Thecompanynowemploysitsowndesignersandillustrators,developsoriginalcharactersandbuildsvirtualsocialcommunitiesarounditsbrands.Roughlyhalfofitsproductsaresoldoverseas,reaching132countriesandregionsacrossEurope,theMiddleEastandSoutheastAsia.

HavingopenedofficiallyinOctober2025,theGlobalDigitalTradeCentermarksYiwu'slatestmoveinitstransformationfromatraditionalwholesalemodeltoadigitallyintegratedtradeecosystem.

Morethan3,700newmerchantshavesincemovedin,spanningeightemergingsectorslikecreativetoys,smartequipmentandfashionjewelry.Morethanhalfareyoungentrepreneurs,manyofwhomarerunningtheirownbrandsorsellIP-basedproducts.

"ThereusedtobeasayingthatYiwuwasjust'aporterofgoods,'"saidZhuXingping,thecenter'sdeputygeneralmanager."NowwearemovingupstreamintodesignandR&D,anddownstreamintoserviceslikepaymentsanddigitallogisticstocreatenewvalueandimproveefficiency."

Totacklelong-standingchallengesrangingfromdesigntooverseasexpansion,YiwuhasrolledoutasuiteofAItoolstailoredtothesmall-commoditiestrade.Merchantscannowgeneratedesigns,createvisualsandtranslatepromotionalvideosintomultiplelanguagesinjustafewclicks.

"China'smarketisamazing,"saidAlikMufalisev,atraderfromGeorgiawhohasbeensourcinghairaccessoriesinYiwufor15years."OtherwiseIwouldn'tkeepcomingback."

Infrastructureandpolicyhavehelpedsustainthatmomentumbehindthescenes.In2025,Yiwu'stotalforeigntradesurpassed800billionyuan(about115billionU.S.dollars)forthefirsttime,accordingtolocalcustomsdata.Exportsrosemorethan24percent,andimportsover32percent.

JiaYajunhasworkedatAistartek(Hefei)ICDesignCo.,Ltd.sincehegraduatedfromtheUniversityofScienceandTechnologyofChina.Thefirmwasfoundedin2022andspecializesinvehicle-mountedvisiontechnology.

Notably,HefeiishometoChina'sExperimentalAdvancedSuperconductingTokamak(EAST),whichhasbeendubbedan"artificialsun"duetoitsuniquefusionprocessthatsimulatesthatofthesun.Lastyear,EASTbrokeaworldrecordbymaintainingasteady-state,high-confinementplasmaoperationfor1,066seconds.
